An 18-hectare urban wetland sanctuary and boardwalk park within the Kotte Bird Sanctuary(Urban Development Authority, 2023). Opened to the public in 2016 as part of a World Bank-assisted project(Urban Development Authority, 2023), Beddagana has well-maintained trails and observation decks that allow visitors to immerse in nature without disturbing sensitive habitats. It is an “ecological haven for local and foreign tourists”, home to dozens of bird species (at least 34 resident and 18 migratory species were recorded in early surveys (Field Ornithology Group of Sri Lanka, 2022) as well as butterflies, dragonflies, and small mammals. Notable features include a Butterfly Walk with flowering plants that attract rare butterflies, a Duck Pond observed from a wooden tower for birdwatching at dawn/dusk, and a floating observation deck on the lake(Field Ornithology Group of Sri Lanka, 2022) (Field Ornithology Group of Sri Lanka, 2022).
The park also has a small information center (“Park School”) that provides educational exhibits and lectures on wetland biodiversity and conservation(Field Ornithology Group of Sri Lanka, 2022). Visitors must stay on marked trails, a rule that protects ground-nesting birds (park management has even installed artificial nest structures to encourage breeding of migratory birds)(Field Ornithology Group of Sri Lanka, 2022). These facilities make Beddagana an ideal model of eco-tourism blending with conservation.
